For me turning compiz off worked! I can switch screens using the Gnome tool or even Fn+F2. I suggest the following explanation: Compiz can't deal with the resolution of the extended Desktop (2304*1024 in my case). As extended desktop is the default option when connecting a new screen, compiz crashes immediately. Visual effects would still be nice...
