ok I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 ... issue is the same.... The only 2 ways to get this to run.
1 - run in Gnome Failsafe or 2 - remove everything in synaptic that references compiz. This really isn't how Ubuntu is supposed to run... and clearly I am not alone in this.
