Public bug reported: Kubuntu 9.10 AMD64 version, all packages updated.
Problem is simple: 1) X server has unexpectedly restarted. 2) Then GUI behaviour went wrong 3) Then system locked up when I attempted to re-login to desktop. I managed to do emergency sync, so there is related part of kernel log available: ====cut from kern.log===- Oct 26 05:41:48 hostname kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.31-14-generic (bui...@crested) (gcc version 4.4.1 (Ubuntu 4.4.1-4ubuntu8) ) #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 (Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic) ===[ 5 days of normal run time were skipped]=== Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278590] general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278595] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host3/target3:0:0/3:0:0:0/block/sdc/uevent Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278597] CPU 3 Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278598] Modules linked in: ufs qnx4 hfsplus hfs minix ntfs vfat msdos fat jfs xfs exportfs reiserfs bridge stp bnep snd_hda_codec_atihdmi snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_ca0106 snd_ac97_codec snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec ac97_bus snd_hwdep snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_pcm snd_seq_dummy snd_seq_oss snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq snd_timer ppdev parport_pc snd_seq_device lp amd64_edac_mod snd soundcore iptable_filter snd_page_alloc ip_tables parport psmouse edac_core btusb serio_raw x_tables i2c_piix4 usbhid ohci1394 ieee1394 r8169 mii radeon ttm drm i2c_algo_bit Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278630] Pid: 1479, comm: Xorg Not tainted 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Nov 1 06:09:32 hostname kernel: [520071.278632] RIP: 0010:[<ffffffffa004ac4c>] [<ffffffffa004ac4c>] radeon_freelist_get+0xcc/0x160 [radeon] ====end cut from kern.log===- Actually, log terminates at this line.
