To fix my problem I did the following: open and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
My default boot entry was: title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-15-generic root (hd0,8) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-15-generic root=UUID=01eb89a5-b98f-43b2-8f8f-b4af8a49d2ce ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-15-generic quiet And I've changed to title Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic root (hd0,8) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=01eb89a5-b98f-43b2-8f8f-b4af8a49d2ce ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic quiet Shortly I've changed the the use of old kernel 2.6.28-15 to the new 2.6.31-14. After doing this I've reboot mys system and the sound was working.
