Hi Bradley,

Sometimes this is actually the BIOS or monitor performing the
dimming/standby.  Could you post the output of:

  cat /var/lib/acpi-support/*-*

so that we can identify your machine type.  Does the screen (a) dim, (b)
blank, (c) back-light turn off, or (d) standby [if an external monitor].

If an external monitor goes into standby, normally the power LED would
change colour and the monitor make a slight noise whilst the electrical
relay clicks.  If the screen is just dimmed, the screen would still be
quite visible, except in direct-sunlight.  If the backlight of an LCD is
being switch off (but the screen left on), it will be possible to see
some output of the screen display if you look carefully.
