Another symptom after the upgrade was loss of the touchpad cursor thingy

As an experiment I burned a livecd and got sound and touchpad worked fine. Bit 
the bullet and did a clean install.

Had to turn off the power saving option for the soundcard to stop a
popping sound when it was re-activated by editing alsa-base.conf, but
sound is now fine, so I guess this bug report can be closed, except that
I'm obviously not very happy that the upgrade broke my system and I had
to reinstall.
