I have this same error mesg, but for me wireless connects to all but hidden AP's. If I set it to connect to a hidden AP I lose all scanning ablitiy and have to conect via the command line with iwconfig, wpa_supplicant and dhclient. Once connect to the hidden AP via this method I still can't scan to see other networks.
