I can confirm this problem for the official Karmic release that shipps
with version 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu3.

Before the grub menu appears the harddisks are frequently accessed for
about 30secs. After I selected a system to boot, it's the same. Harddisc
access for 30secs.

My Harddisk constellation:

/dev/sda (on IDE Controller, 320GB)
/dev/sda1 (320GB, encrpted)

/dev/sdb (on SATA Controller, 80GB)
/dev/sdb1 (Windows, NTFS, 40GB)
/dev/sdb2 (/boot, ext4, 200MB)
/dev/sdb3 (/, LVM encrypted, ext4, 40GB)

/dev/sdc (on SATA Controller, 500GB)
/dev/sdc1 (Ubuntu 9.04, ext3, 50GB)
/dev/sdc2 (Data, ext3, 450 GB)

Can I provide more information that may help?
