I'm seeing a problem that may be related. I can't seem to see anything
on my desktop at all, regardless of the desktop effects setting.

I've got the default background image of a clean install. Trying to
change it doesn't show anything. I also can't see any menus if I right-
click on the desktop, and the usual mouse wheel to switch desktops when
the wall or cube is enabled doesn't respond either.

However I can create items in the desktop folder without any problem.
It's like the display of the desktop is being overridden with some kind
of default version.

This is a fresh install of 9.10 64 bit, system is a G45 motherboard
using the onboard Intel graphics.
