Not sure what you mean by fakeraid, but interesting you should mention raids. I fixed this problem by deleting the raid my disk was setup in (It needs to be in raid for the bios to boot from it for some reason). After installing Ubuntu, I recreated the single disk raid array and it booted up fine.
I still think it might be a bug of some kind, because it worked ok in Jaunty, I think 8.10 and the Karmic beta too.
