having the same issue <snip 2> with a WD (Western Digital) drive (My Book Essential Edition 2.0 WD10000H1U-00)
Was using BackupPC to use the drive for backup's and it failed, its ironoc in a sad way LOL :) it failed at about 68GB on the drive, so I amd gettign the impression that this could be coming that we are not handeling the size or the sence code coming back from the drive for this, at the 68 GB stage. done a cat /dev/sdc1 just to see if I could spin the disk and it seems to spin, though the beauty of putty is that I couldn't exit from it ! :) talked to WD and WD are claming that linux is not supported ( Whats new!!) Problem here is that we are not getting any sense codes, so cannot even see what the problem is. Can we add a Debug flag on to the system ? also using LVM, I am able to see the disk through fdisk -l but fsck is failing at 66.1% with just a hang. judging by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/460831 its looks to be the same issue, and ubuntu is not handling the scsi codes sent back by the device. <snip 1> r...@law17:~# pvdisplay /dev/BackupVolume/backupVol: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 0: Input/output error --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sdc1 VG Name BackupVolume PV Size 931.51 GB / not usable 3.19 MB Allocatable yes PE Size (KByte) 4096 Total PE 238466 Free PE 386 Allocated PE 238080 PV UUID zgKs6p-2Lds-2SO9-VCYW-Zwo7-gol0-wZ2mO0 <snip 2> Oct 29 14:16:11 law17 kernel: [ 5070.532065] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Add.
