Tried to get some more messages by adding a "while(true); do sleep 0.1; sync; done;" to the /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default and got: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US. Interestingly, if instead choosing to install it succeeds to start the installer, and if then choosing to quit the installer, one ends up on the desktop, which appears to work fine.
