Just an observation: it appears that when disconnecting the AC power, the power manager thinks that the laptop lid is closed, which is why it goes into suspend. If I set the lid close action to "blank screen" when running on battery, then the power manager blanks the screen upon disconnection of the AC power instead of entering suspend mode. I did not have this problem with Jaunty (although to be fair, I don't think my lid events were fully working properly in Jaunty either).
