Correction, I did not have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed. So the only problem is that its installation is not suggested when the missing plugin is identified, and also that when one searches for such plugins in synaptic or the software center, instead of being suggested to install the restricted-extras, one gets individual packages which do not necessarily solve the problem (as libmms0 in synaptic).
