I also filed bug 459441 for ppp package. If you can reproduce getting log like I described in original report, and you'll see that there's "NetworkManager: <WARN> pppd_timed_out(): Looks like pppd didn't initialize our dbus module" line, please, confirm that bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ppp/+bug/459441).
