I'm experiencing the same problem on a Dell Latitude D600. For me the behavior seems to depend on the speed of the button click: if I click (or rather, release) the button fast enough, it works as expected, but if doing it slowly I see the "click and hold" behavior. In my case I'm seeing it both with trackpoint buttons as well as mousepad buttons, but not when using external mouse (no matter how slowly I release the button).
