@Shady, What is the number of the bug you reported? When you tried creating the xorg.conf I have posted in the OP, where you using a live CD? Did you make sure after booting that Ubuntu did not rename it and not use it? Maybe you should increase slightly the horizontal and/or vertical range(s). Can you post your xorg.0.log?
