Yes, this comes when you change the default desktop theme from "Oxygen" to something else.
You need to login to an empty Destop and press ALT+F2 to open a exute command line, type in "systemsettings" and change the style back to "Oxygen". After an logout and and a new login you get again a complete desktop. I can't even find this folder "/faces" NEITEHER ON JAUNTY OR KARMIC. This BUG prevents karmic from using any other style as Oxygen.
