I have recently re-installed karmic and have gmail imap, gmail pop and other imap accounts setup and they all cause the icon to become 'black' when I have new mail.
This is with a default Ubuntu Karmic install with the default icon theme. I'd like to stress that the icon will not change if you aren't using an icon theme that supports the message-indicator.
