On 20070217 the "Hardware Information" selection is returned to the Control Center which it should be. I use it, since I run on several computers, and change hardware from time to time.
The tab for optionally returning hardware info to the developers is gone out of system tools. It didn't give me any hardware information anyway. On booting up, there wasn't a request for returning the hardware info.
