With my E169 the sudo rmmod usb-storage sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1001
worked (other people will find their vendor and product IDs on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkManager/Hardware/3G) however I had an additional isssue in that no DNS was picked up - /etc/resolv.conf was empty.
