It crashes for me too, whenever gnome-screensaver tries to lock the screen. The 
screen is locked, ie. I cannot interact with it, however it is not hidden - and 
there is window that pops out and informs about the abnormal termination of a 
process. 
I have to switch to console, login and kill process (gnome-screensaver), and 
after that I can interact with desktop once again.

I suspect "gnome screensaver helper gl" is incorrectly assuming I have
access to OpenGL acceleration, which is not true.
