Isn't that what mtpfs does? I had it somewhat working on Jaunty with a notoriously uncooperative Philips Gogear 1630 (it's a bit of a pain but hey, it was only $30...) Actually I was somewhat happy to notice that with the update to libmtp 0.3.7 in Karmic, and some other sort of magic that I don't understand, my MTP device now automounts smoothly in just a few seconds (it used to take over a minute, and I had to disable the automount introduced in Jaunty) and shows up as a file system in Nautilus - so cheers to whoever figured that out! It's not quite perfect, unfortunately: while I was able to copy files with ease, the mp3 player didn't detect the files as music tracks; perhaps the metadata was missing? So long story short, I still have to add music using Rhythmbox or Amarok 1.4, but there's no problem moving files back and forth in Nautilus - and my device is *really* problematic!
