I am experiencing this problem myself with a Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722. It has an Nvidia Go 7900 GS. It worked GREAT in Dapper, but fails with the symptoms described above in Edgy. Some of the above posts have suggested modifying the Bus ID in the xorg.conf file. Well... I don't have a Bus ID anywhere in my xorg.conf file. Any ideas? Is this really a bug? If so, I certainly would appreciate it a lot of the fine Ubuntu developers could take care of it.
