ubuntu 9.10 does boot with: acpi=off noapic pnpbios=off quiet splash -- 2 lines of text, then a glowing white ubuntu logo(just a white logo, no text and no movement. black background), screenstatic, then a screen with a background ubuntu logo(white with text) and a loading bar, live desktop. this is good enough for me...
