I have a _similar_ issue and I believe the solution would apply to both myself as well as the original reporter. My system (IBM ThinkCentre E50) is connected to IBM E74 monitor. Ubuntu 9.10 (downloaded on 14 Oct) failed to detect the monitor (System->Preferences->Display shows it as "Unknown Monitor"). Here is the output of ddcprobe. When I wanted to edit the xorg.conf file manually, I could not find the file anywhere in the entire filesystem. So, I checked the x log to figure out which config file it is using, but found that it is using default configuration (file /var/log/Xorg.0.log attached). Now, how/where do I add the monitor details so X can improve my screen resolution (currently it is stuck at 900x600 though both the gfx chip and monitor can go higher).
