Happens to me, too. Every time i use the panel without pppd running is working well. As soon as i have pppd running (connection to internet throught eth0, f.i.) if i have mouse over the gnome-panel it freezes or if i try to open a menu(right mouse button) gdm freezes. I need to either kill gnome-panel or restart gdm (usually CTRL-ALT-BT) and go to emergency terminal and killall gnome-panel to have it work again. and then start all over every time i connect.
