Changed my original posting as I meant server cd's rather than
alternate.  Installed with a dapper alternate cd last night and it was
fine.  No slowness at all on the same hardware.

  I 1st suspected this was due to the drive however after installing
  Debian 3.1_r4 i386 using the USB CDROM on the same hardware (which
  worked as expected from an internal drive) I now believe the problem is
  with the live CD kernels.
