With the Karmic release now imminent, I decided to go back to the
default package, libsdl1.2debian-alsa.

sdlmame exhibits the same symptoms of skipping or garbled sound
previously mentioned in this bug. This is followed by the sound being
lost entirely, followed by sdlmame hanging. Reverting to the non-default
package libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio fixes all these issues.

Why is this working package not the default in Karmic?

Why is the broken package the default in Karmic?

If the broken default package remains, why is it not being fixed?
