Hi, I have a similar problem after upgrading from Jaunty (the upgrade crashed and I was able to finish it using a bootable USB). mountall --debug appears to hang because other mounts are waiting for / e.g.: try_mount: /tmp waiting for /
/ mounts perfectly when I use http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/OMGBroken and allows me to mount as rw using "mount -o rw,remount /". Editing grub to change the mount option of / from ro to rw appears to fix this problem.
