I just tried the Ubuntu Karmic UNR Live *Beta*, booting it live from a USB-attached SD card, and this bug appears fixed. The console initialization in dmesg (kernel 2.6.31-11-generic) now says:
[ 5.207452] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810 [ 5.238043] i915 0000:00:02.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16 [ 5.238054] i915 0000:00:02.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 5.467755] [drm] fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device [ 5.467775] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0 [ 5.775925] [drm] LVDS-8: set mode 1024x576 c [ 6.176863] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x36 I got myself somehow into a text console and filled and counted 36 lines. No more typing "below" the bottom of the screen.
