I do have a question about the method you describe for making a 
permanent fix.  You describe editing the line that begins  # defoptions= 
. . .   .   I thought that lines beginning with a "#" are comment lines 
and aren't read by the system -- if that's true, how can editing it 
cause anything to happen, even if I then run "upgrade-grub" ?
