This turns out to be more a bug in pbuilder: The _original_ /etc/pbuilderrc which is generated by apt-get install pbuilder contains: MIRRORSITE=http://ftp.jp.debian.org/debian so that my previous tries had no chance to go right.
The same config file on another Ubuntu EDGY PC has a correct MIRRORSITE setting. So the pbuilder should take a correct Ubuntu setting with it.
