** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Hardware that I'm using: Toshiba Qosmio X300 laptop NVIDIA 9800M GTX Core Duo 2.66 4 GB RAM 2 x 320 GB HDD's with Ubuntu 64 bit 8.10 installed on the second What's happened? I downgraded to 8.10 64 bit after not being able to get any nvidia drivers to work. I upgraded everything with synaptic and find that the sound only works on linux kernel 2.6.27-9-generic rather than the latest which is 2.6.27-14-generic. - So I use the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel - install 177.82 nvidia driver. It pops up with errors - reinstall a few times and it works - compiz and firefox cause the computer to hang - hard reboot - driver doesn't work anymore - try to install 180.11, doesn't work. try to install 185, it doesn't work either - find out 9800M GTX isn't supported by 177.82 (although why would it work??) - so I go back to 180.11 nvidia driver - comes up with error on startup : (EE) No devices detected - also the command sudo grep -n "^(EE)" /var/log/Xorg*log produces this: /var/log/Xorg.0.log:1652:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) /var/log/Xorg.failsafe.log:1652:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu3 ProcEnviron: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games LANG=en_AU.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersion: Linux version 2.6.27-9-generic (bui...@yellow) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu11) ) #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 SourcePackage: xorg Uname: Linux 2.6.27-9-generic x86_64 xkbcomp: + + [lspci] + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub [8086:2a40] (rev 07) + Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff00] + 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation Device [10de:0617] (rev a2) + Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff01]
