Here's some more info:

$ free
                 total          used           free      shared    buffers
cached
Mem:        506480     499220       7260          0       1648      65300
-/+ buffers/cache:     432272      74208
Swap:      1775172     499328    1275844
$

Notice the swap amount being used.
I don't know what exactly is in that swap, but judging by the
application/desktop responsiveness I would say that it holds all the stuff I am
currently working with. Maybe that explains the intensive CPU usage. The
computer has to constantly swap (or trash) when I switch between applications.

At the time "free" was measured, top displayed xmms using 38% of memory
and firefox 11%, the rest was below 5%.

Maybe it's xmms' fault after all? Or maybe a kernel misconfiguration?
