Very annoying ideed. Well, that means I still have to tell a newbie to
go to the commandline to configure their system, i.e. have their fonts
displayed correctly in FF. Same thing happens when installing kde
applications in gnome.

So, maybe gnome font settings should -- because they cannot set font
hinting for all users in /etc/fonts/conf.d/ -- still write a .fonts.conf
in the user directory for those applications that need it?
