Further info: - the positioning/theming issue seems to also crop up when the laptop is docked after running undocked sometimes. - when the gnome theme dies (falls back to unthemed, Windows 95ish appearance), attempting to change settings in gnome-display-properties has no effect, UNTIL gnome-appearance-properties is run, which also restores the current theme.
