Reinhard, thank you for your comment.

I had thought about this.  I lack the experience to comment
authoritatively, but I had hoped there would be no issue in possibly
having both emacs23 and emacs22 (plus nxml-mode) installed unless
emacs23 also conflicted with nxml-mode.  Is that incorrect?

I'd absolutely agree with you if the hope I described above turns out to
be unwarranted.

I wonder if there is no way to tell aptitude and friends that emacs23
includes nxml-mode besides merely dropping it from Depends.
