Sorry for being unclear here.

Once the grub menu disappears, the screen goes black for quite a while
and the next thing I see is the brownish background with the "moving
line". A few seconds later, I see the gdm greeter where I can chose the
user and enter the password.

In general, this would be fine with me, however during one of the system
boots, there was a forced fsck. And this happens during the screen is
completely black. So no message, no possibility to skip, just a looong
period of black screen (and permanent disk io, of course).
