I apologize for double posting, but I have two more things that may be of use:
-xsplash did work without any problems when booting off of the LiveCD; only when it was installed did xsplash not work and the text appeared -On any Linux distribution I've tried on the Toshiba R10, the shutdown graphic was not displayed.
