Do you use Windows, not Linux XPIs? The one dubbed "Linux" is http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/1.5.0.9/linux-i686/xpi/. I'm not sure if they differ or not, but at least the size does.
