I just changed the card with an older GeForce 8500GT/PCI/SSE2 and it works much better without any nvidia drivers with 9.04 than with the FX220.
Activation now appears in the "Hardware Drivers" (does not appear with the FX220 installed), but activation causes the system not to start properly with either card installed - similar than the error described above. Replacing the standard xorg.conf with another now allows at least normal resulutions; but no 3D without drivers of course. The FX220 only allow 640x320 & 800x600. The system is a Medion Akoya E7330 D.
