I will confirm camper365's observation in #75; running the same versions. As soon as I untick "/apps/nautilus/preferences/show desktop" in gconf- editor nautilus starts autospawning. I got tired of turning off the option in /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop and now just keep the Desktop view enabled.
