Public bug reported: Ubuntu 9.04 AMD-64 version, all updates enabled.
$ uname -a Linux ath64 2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 9 10:48:52 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux The only difference from defaults is a recent AMD proprietary driver which works much better than stock one (in terms of speed, proper support of my video card and lack of visual glitches). After running for a while I encountered hard system deadlock while playing The Mana World game. I managed to complete emergency shutdown sequence and reboot system without data loss in logs. I found the following data in kern.log related to crash: ---[cut]--- Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117700] general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117710] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117716] Dumping ftrace buffer: Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117722] (ftrace buffer empty) Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117726] CPU 0 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117729] Modules linked in: xfs nls_iso8859_1 nls_cp437 vfat fat binfmt_misc fglrx(P) bridge stp bnep video output input_polldev lp snd_hda_intel snd_seq_dummy snd_ca0106 snd_seq_oss snd_ac97_codec snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_midi_event snd_mixer_oss snd_seq snd_pcm snd_seq_device psmouse snd_timer ppdev snd ac97_bus btusb i2c_piix4 serio_raw soundcore snd_page_alloc parport_pc parport pcspkr usbhid usb_storage ohci1394 ieee1394 r8169 mii fbcon tileblit font bitblit softcursor Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117804] Pid: 3163, comm: Xorg Tainted: P 2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117809] RIP: 0010:[<ffffffff802c719e>] [<ffffffff802c719e>] handle_mm_fault+0x6e/0x470 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117826] RSP: 0000:ffff88022dc6dd58 EFLAGS: 00013282 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117831] RAX: ffff88022ce3f740 RBX: f7ff88022e0667f8 RCX: 0000000000000001 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117836] RDX: ffff8800a75dc000 RSI: ffff8801130652a0 RDI: ffff88022ce3f740 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117841] RBP: ffff88022dc6ddd8 R08: 00007fea15925000 R09: 00007fea15925000 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117846] R10: 0000000000000000 R11: 00007fea1f5d2c12 R12: 00007fea15925000 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117850] R13: 00007fea15925000 R14: ffff8801130652a0 R15: ffff88022dc6df58 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117856] FS: 00007fea21a26700(0000) GS:ffffffff80a9b000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117862] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117866] CR2: 00007fea15925000 CR3: 000000022e066000 CR4: 00000000000006a0 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117871] DR0: 0000000000000000 DR1: 0000000000000000 DR2: 0000000000000000 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117875] DR3: 0000000000000000 DR6: 00000000ffff0ff0 DR7: 0000000000000400 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117881] Process Xorg (pid: 3163, threadinfo ffff88022dc6c000, task ffff88022bcfc320) Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117885] Stack: Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117888] ffff88015a1a19e0 ffff88022dcf8000 ffff88015a1a1d00 0000000000600412 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117897] ffff88022dc6dd88 000000018022f669 ffff88022ce3f740 ffff88022dc6dda8 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117905] 0000000000003282 0000000000000001 ffff88022dc6ddc8 ffff8801130652a0 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117914] Call Trace: Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117919] [<ffffffff8069e797>] do_page_fault+0x307/0x780 Sep 25 05:31:31 ath64 kernel: [95490.117929] [<ffffffffa02e915c>] ?
