I'm not convinced that its a beryl svn bug. I get the same error with other python gtk packages like straw rss reader. I havent changed the path or anything else.
Here is a temporary fix I posted on a duplicate bug: I have the same problem. My friend suggested that the error might be because of the differences in python-gtk and python packages because python-gtk is version 2.4 while python is version 2.5. So, I tried to relink /usr/bin/python back to /usr/bin/python2.4 and that solved the problem.
