I am not able to reproduce, what you have seen. If I open the file with read only permission I still get wrong characters.
The interesting part is, that the document from you, that you opened with read only permission is smaller in size. 36,1 KiB vs. 39.5KiB I also noticed that there are less fonts embeded in the smaller document.
