Since I took the "floating" top package, it is possible that the thousands of updates applied have migrated me from 8.3 to 8.4. I just checked in Synaptic and the versions don't go back beyond 8.3. More importantly, nothing in 8.4 "fixed" this problem. They may have stopped the problem from occurring in 8.4, but nothing in the update process went back and fixed the mess.
