I'm seeing the same error on the XFCE desktop of Karmic/ Mythbuntu Alpha 6.

I am using a Windows-formatted NTFS USB stick (8GB).  On insertion, I
get the "cannot get volume.fstype.alternative" popup on the desktop.

The stick can be mounted manually by root and used for r/w operations
without trouble.
