It's probably more important for the bag to have visible handles than for it to have stuff inside it. Otherwise it looks a little too much like a cheap grocery bag, rather than a good-quality department store bag (the corner store vs. Harrods).
Ivanka mentioned the possibility of using a giftbox (with a ribbon?) instead of a shopping bag.
