I encountered the same issue on my notebook. How do I give the i915.modeset=0 statement correctly? I tried in GRUB to modify the command with button C and E, typed the i915.modeset=0 in different places, but this doesn‘t seem to change the situation. After booting I have a root shell, but I cannot see it.
